Though Islam may be seen today as ‘something foreign’ and perhaps even exotic, it is not new to Europe. In fact it would be fair to say that Islam has been a European phenomenon since the beginning of its history. Muslims ruled Spain for almost 800 years, lived in Sicily and Southern Italy for over 250 years and have played a historical role in the scientific and philosophical heritage of Europe. This unit was established in 1992 following the Islam in Europe Conference held in that year to mark the 20th year of the Islamic Foundation.
