The Queen marks her Diamond Jubilee with faith communities

At a reception in Lambeth Palace representatives of the nine faiths of Britain presented gifts to her majesty Queen Elizabeth II in honour of the 60th anniversary of her reign.

A delegation of four: Maulana Shahid Raza, Sughra Ahmed, Yusuf al Khoie and Farooq Murad accepted an invitation from the archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams to present the Queen with a gift on behalf of Britain’s Muslims. Each of the nine faiths selected an item of religious or spiritual signi cance for the occasion. the Queen and the duke of edinburgh met with each delegation where introductions were made, gifts were explained and the royal couple engaged in conversation with all. the gift from the muslim group was a beautifully framed piece of the Kiswa from the Ka‘aba that read: those who do good deeds nd tranquillity in their hearts. other gifts included a piece of scripture, the codex Valmadonna i, from the Jewish group, a silver stupa from the Buddhists, the robe of ‘abdu’l-Baha’ from the Baha’i group, and a painting of maharaja ranjit singh from the sikh group amongst others.

After the presentations had been made the groups moved into the atrium where other faith colleagues gathered to meet with the royal couple and listen to a short contribution by the arch- bishop of canterbury and the Queen who ended her speech with support for all nine faiths in the uK and their relationship with the church.
