Census Data and Analysis Training Workshop

Census Data and Analysis Training Workshop

Census Data and Analysis Training Workshop

  • Markfield Conference Centre

Aims and Objectives

To provide training to researchers and students to access and analyse Census data on faith and ethnic communities. It will convey the scope of the census data and the potential for addressing the needs of our community. The Islamic Foundation is organising the workshop in partnership with the Muslim Council of Britain’s Research & Documentation Committee (ReDoc) to widen the pool of young Muslims who have expertise in handling and using social statistics for data driven policy development.

Pre-requisites

Basic skills in use of Microsoft Excel; interest in data analysis.

Outcomes

Participants will identify Census projects of interest for them to continue work either singly or in teams, with ReDoc support.

Background

Census data is a unique resource for data on demographics and socio-economic characteristics. There is amazing scope to analyse trends over a twenty-year period since the religion question has formed part of the census: 2001, 2011 and 2021.

ReDoc has accessed 2011 data to produce a widely-cited report, British Muslims in Numbers (2015) MCBCensusReport_2015.pdf. This was followed up with a detailed report on Elderly & End of life care for Muslims (2019) Elderly and End of Life Care for Muslims in the UK - Muslim Council of Britain (MCB).

Headline data from the 2021 Census of England & Wales was released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in June 2022 and the religion and ethnicity data is due to be released by the end of the year and in 2023.

Structure

The workshop will be conducted by ReDoc members Mehboob Asaria and Jamil Sherif. It will comprise a face-to-face session on 27th August 2022, 11 – 4 pm, at the Islamic Foundation campus, Leicester. This will be followed up with Zoom sessions to provide support on census project work. Expert support will be provided by LSE’s Assistant Professor in Health Policy, Dr. Miqdad Asaria.
