The Inaugural Khurshid Ahmad Memorial Lecture

On Saturday, 18 April 2026, The Islamic Foundation (UK) hosted the Inaugural Khurshid Ahmad Memorial Lecture, convening a distinguished audience of academics, researchers, policymakers, and community leaders for an afternoon dedicated to reflection.

The lecture marked the launch of an annual series established to honour the life and intellectual legacy of Professor Khurshid Ahmad (1932–2025)—a pioneering scholar of Islamic economics, often referred to as the father of Islamic Economics, a leading figure in contemporary Islamic thought, and a committed public intellectual whose work continues to influence debates on ethics, political economy, and public life.

The inaugural keynote was delivered by John L. Esposito, University Professor at Georgetown University, who offered thoughtful reflections on the enduring relevance of Professor Khurshid Ahmad’s contributions to Islamic studies, particularly in Islamic economics, political economy, and ethical governance. His lecture situated Professor Ahmad’s work within broader global discussions on religion, modernity, and the moral challenges facing contemporary societies.

The keynote was followed by a panel discussion with Professor Dr Anis Ahmad,  founding Vice-Chancellor of Riphah International University, Professor John Presley, Emeritus professor, Loughborough University and Dr Abdul Bari, trustee of the Islamic Foundation. The discussion highlighted the continued importance of engaging critically with Professor Ahmad’s intellectual legacy, particularly in light of present-day challenges related to economic inequality, development, and political justice.

The event was attended by a diverse and engaged audience, including representatives from academic institutions, policy organisations, and civil society, as well as members of Professor Khurshid Ahmad’s family. The gathering reflected the wide-reaching impact of his work and the continued relevance of the questions he raised throughout his life.

The lecture also marked the beginning of an ongoing scholarly initiative. The proceedings of the inaugural lecture will be published as part of a dedicated series, contributing to continued research and reflection inspired by Professor Ahmad’s legacy.

The Islamic Foundation extends its sincere thanks to all those who attended and contributed to the success of this inaugural event. The Memorial Lecture will continue as an annual forum for serious intellectual engagement, bringing together scholars and thinkers to explore the ethical and intellectual challenges of our time.
